Reach Outdoors are looking for a highly professional, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our small team of passionate, fun and dedicated adventure guides. Based in beautiful South Devon you will spend most of your summer taking people on journeys of discovery to the hidden gems of this corner of England.

Salary : £14,500 – £17, 500 pro-rata based on experience and qualifications.

Job Description
Post: Lead Adventure Guide (Seasonal)
Responsible to: The Directors
Period: 1st May 2014 to September 30th 2014
Position description: 
This role is to assist Reach Outdoors in the delivery of its operations as an Outdoor Adventure provider throughout the Spring and Summer season. Predominantly a delivery role, the person in post will have additional responsibilities, including kit maintenance and project management. The post will require some overnight responsibilities.

Main Responsibilities
• Leading adventurous activity sessions for a range of clients including, Scouts, Adult groups, Families and Youth groups.
• Lead the delivery of Duke of Edinburgh award expedition training and practice. In modes of travel where the candidate is suitably experienced and qualified.
• Assist in the delivery of Reach Outdoors’ Long term youth development projects. 
• Assist in the delivery of Adventure residential experiences which may require overnight duties. 
General Responsibilities
• Ensure the safe delivery of adventurous activities in line with Reach Outdoors Standard Operating Procedures at all times.
• Ensure Reach Outdoors equipment is maintained to a high standard and is fit for purpose at all times.
• Promote Reach Outdoors in a positive light.
• Be an advocate for positive outdoor engagement to encourage and support youth development in the outdoors.
• Be involved in the monitoring and recording of soft and hard outcomes as required by the Reach Outdoors Directors.
• Drive company vehicles to delivery locations if suitably qualified.
• Transport Reach Outdoors clients in a company minibus if suitably qualified.

Working hours
The core hours of this post will be 08:00 – 17:00, 5 days a week. This will include some weekends. Each weekly rota will be arranged a fortnight in advance to ensure an even distribution of weekend responsibilities between Reach Staff. This equates to 42.5 hours a week, allowing 30 minutes for lunch each day.

Person Specification
Essential skills and qualifications
1. Successful candidates will hold at least three awards from the following list;
• BCU/UKCC Level 2 coach with 3 star Sea
• Mountain Leader (summer assessed)
• Coasteering guide with at least two years logged in lead capacity
• Single Pitch Award (assessed)
• MIAS trail leader (or award to similar standard)
• D of E Gold assessor
2. Candidates must be effective communicators with at least two years experience of delivering adventurous activity to a range of clients. 
3. Candidates should be proficient in the facilitation of effective reviewing techniques to promote the transfer of learning.
4. Candidates must be able to work independently and be able to demonstrate effective decision making in remote locations.
5. Candidates must have a passion for the outdoors that is evident in their demeanour and inspires others to embark on adventure and promotes development.
6. Candidates must understand the importance of maintaining PPE and Outdoor equipment and have experience of kit maintenance systems.
7. Candidates must have an in date outdoor specific 1st aid award.
8. Full, clean UK driving licence.

  • Desirable skills and qualifications* 
    1. BCU/UKCC four star leadership award in Sea kayaking
    2. D1 or D1+E PSV driving licence with driver qualification card
    3. Mountain Instructors Award
    4. Gorge walking experience in lead capacity
    5. APIOL
    6. Further or Higher Education in subject relevant to Outdoor/Adventure education.
    7. D of E expedition supervisor experience.
