This activity is aimed at adults and children accompanied by adults.
This is an introductory course and is geared toward people who wish to immerse themsevles in their local natural environment and learn the basics of coastal foraging.
The activity does not provide a qualification or statement of competency in foraging for participants.
Due to the uneven and slippery surfaces encountered during much of this activity, we suggest that only those who are confident/mobile enough to move over such ground should participate in this activity. We have plenty of other fantastic activities on offer on our website, so we're sure to be able to find something more suitable if this isn't the case.
Dogs are currently not permitted to accompany participants on this event. Sorry pup!
This activity will involve a mix of guided exploration, plant, seaweed and shellfish identification, and plenty of opportunity for answering questions on the different things we find along the way.
We will generally spend a short time meeting and getting to know each other, before setting off to identify some nearby species and discuss how we know what we're looking at.
Once we arrive at our location we will have time for exploring in smaller groups if we wish to do so, before re-joining to look at our finds.
On finishing our exploration we will have the chance to record our findings in whichever way is most helpful for us, for example compiling a species white-board or logging findings on iNaturalist
Your Coastal Foraging Exploration session will be made more comfortable and informative with the help of:
- Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear (wellies are an excellent choice)
- Drinking water
- A notebook/sketch pad/some form of recording information you find interesting
- A camera for photographing specimens in the field
- The iNaturalist app, together with an active iNaturalist account
